Welcome to The Appalachian Magazine. Your window into the soul of Appalachia.

At The Appalachian Magazine, our connection to Appalachia reaches back through hundreds of years of family history in the mountains. Our roots wind through the hills of Eastern Kentucky, the mountains of West Virginia, the valleys of Virginia, and the ridges of North Carolina, places where generations built lives, raised families, preserved traditions, and created communities that continue to shape who we are today.

For us, the mountains are more than a landscape. They hold family stories, memories, traditions, hardships, triumphs, and a sense of belonging that has endured across generations. That connection inspires our commitment to sharing the stories of Appalachia with curiosity, respect, and a genuine love for the region and its people.

Our Mission

The Appalachian Magazine is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the history, culture, people, places, and living traditions of Appalachia. Honor the past. Celebrate the present. Protect the future.

Why We Started This Magazine

Our Purpose

Appalachia is far more complex than the stereotypes that have too often defined it from the outside. It is a region shaped by remarkable landscapes, deeply rooted communities, cultural traditions, creativity, hardship, resilience, and generations of people whose stories deserve to be remembered.

We created The Appalachian Magazine to explore those stories and share a fuller picture of the region we love. From forgotten histories and family traditions to mountain towns, local food, artisans, outdoor adventures, destinations, and the people carrying Appalachian culture forward, we want readers to discover both the Appalachia that has been and the Appalachia that is still becoming.

Our Background

Heritage: Hundreds of years of Appalachian family history with roots extending through Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, and the surrounding mountain region.
Experience: Lifelong curiosity about Appalachian history, culture, genealogy, folklore, communities, traditions, and the stories passed from one generation to the next.
Connection: A personal relationship with Appalachia shaped by family history, research, travel, storytelling, and a continuing desire to understand the places and people that make the region extraordinary.
Commitment: Preserving stories that might otherwise be forgotten while celebrating the communities, traditions, landscapes, and people shaping Appalachia today.
